The cover of a think tank report, just like the cover of a book or magazine, is meant to set the tone, illustrate subject matter, and, hopefully, be both alluring and memorable. When I first started at the Center for a New American Security, most of the publication covers featured a tiny stock image—a photo of some head of state or perhaps a warship. This was standard across the think tank community. As coworkers began to see the value in design, we began to experiment more with custom illustrations, photo collages, and a variety of different styles.

It became clear that we could have a variety of styles as long as we kept the collection cohesive. We started utilizing our color palette and black and white cut-out imagery to create a unique and consistent style. We also redesigned the layout of the printed report to give the art some breathing room and launched a website that is more visual than the previous text-heavy site. I’ve created cover art for a variety of topics, ranging from cyber threats to negotiations with North Korea, veterans benefits, and space.
